What Does Tartar Actually Do to Your Enamel??The first step in understanding tartar is understanding plaque. Plaque is the sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. When your teeth are not brushed properly, plaque develops as a result of food that is left on your teeth. Dental plaque hardens and turns into tartar. Most people have tartar. You notice it most when you are sitting in our dental chair at SmileCOS Dentistry and we're scraping it off your teeth. Tartar is a yellow or brown deposit. It is present because plaque has not been removed in those places and has hardened.

Tartar and Enamel

Tartar does not play nicely with others. In fact, not only does it coat the exterior of the teeth, but it can also invade below the gum line. In particular, tartar can damage the enamel of the teeth. Enamel is the hard outer layer of each tooth. Enamel is worth protecting, as it is the prime defense mechanism for the vitality of the tooth. Over time, tartar can destroy the enamel completely. If tartar is on the offensive in your mouth, you may have tooth sensitivity and cavities may be forming.
