You have many options to replace missing teeth, among them dental bridges. At SmileCOS Dentistry, we offer high-quality dental bridges that replace your missing teeth, allowing you to avoid embarrassment when talking or smiling and even help make chewing your favorite foods easier.
What are Dental Bridges?
Dental bridges are a permanent appliance in your mouth. It uses the two teeth on either side of the missing tooth as anchors. Our lab creates two dental crowns that go over each surrounding tooth with a pontic, or fake tooth, in the middle. The crowns and pontic are attached with the chosen material and placed in your mouth as a viable tooth replacement.
Preparing for Dental Bridges
The dental bridge procedure occurs in two appointments. At the first appointment, our dentists must prepare the area. This involves preparing the two teeth on either side of the missing tooth, as they need to be able to accept dental crowns.
Preparing the anchor teeth involves cleaning the teeth, removing any decay (if present), and filing the enamel down to make room for the dental crown. Our dentists will administer anesthetic before starting this procedure to ensure your complete comfort as we prepare your mouth for the dental crown/bridge.
Once we prepare the area, our dentists will take an impression of your mouth, which we send to our lab. The lab then creates crowns and an artificial tooth that matches the shape and color of your other teeth. This way the bridge blends in well, making no one the wiser that you have a fake tooth.
Placing the Dental Bridge
At your second appointment, our dentists place the dental bridge in your mouth. First, we place it temporarily to ensure that you are happy with its look and feel. Together we will assess its cosmetic appearance as well as how it feels. We want to ensure that it feels comfortable so that you can easily talk, smile, and chew. A dental bridge should help restore your self-confidence and ability to easily be around others without worrying about a gap in your mouth.
Caring for a Dental Bridge
Caring for your dental bridge is as easy as caring for your natural teeth. As long as you keep up your regular hygiene habits, your dental bridge should last for many years. We encourage you to brush your teeth, including the area with the bridge, at least twice a day. This helps eliminate any built-up debris and bacteria that could lead to plaque and tartar build-up. We also recommend that you floss your teeth at least once a day, getting in between the teeth in the dental bridge to remove any leftover debris that could cause decay or infection.
